In a market that's awash with generic family SUVs, the Jeep Cherokee offers something a little different. Drawing heavily on the brand's off-road reputation and ruggedness, the 2020 version adds an extra performance dimension to the typical five-seater SUV experience, without sacrificing comfort or modern tech features.

What features does the latest model offer to savvy buyers? Read our 2020 Jeep Cherokee review to find out.

Powertrain and Performance

The entry-level Cherokee comes with a 2.4L gas engine producing a respectable 180 horsepower with 171lb-ft of torque. This configuration is ample for daily driving duties, but it's not the only option in the 2020 lineup.

Upgrading to a 2.0L I4 turbo engine raises the output to 270hp and 295lb-ft, while a thirstier 3.2L V6 option produces 271hp with a reduced torque of 239lb-ft.

Out of the three engines, it's the 2.0L turbo mill which is the most impressive, combining off-road performance potential with everyday efficiency.

All engines pass their power through a nine-speed automatic transmission, with an option of either front-wheel or all-wheel drive available.

Cherokee Off-Road Features

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee can be equipped with the Selec-Terrain system, which customizes traction control for different driving conditions. There are preset modes available for snow, off-road, and sports performance, plus an automatic setting which is perhaps the most useful for highway and city driving.

Fuel Economy

The estimated fuel economy of the Cherokee depends on the powertrain that's chosen. Combining the basic 2.4L engine with front-wheel drive produces figures of 10.8L / 100km in the city and 7.6L / 100km on the highway. As you'd expect, the V6 engine with all-wheel drive performs slightly less economically, with 12.9L / 100km in the city and 9.9L / 100km on the highway.

Interior Technology and Comfort

The Jeep brand may be forever associated with muscular off-road performance, but inside the cabin, the Cherokee offers a thoroughly comfortable and modern experience.

A 7" touchscreen controls the infotainment features, with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay taking care of device integration. If the 7" screen isn't enough, higher trims upgrade it to an 8.4" model and add additional USB ports into the connectivity mix.

For a five-seater SUV, the Cherokee is satisfyingly spacious. The front row offers a generous 104cm of legroom in the front, with 102cm in the back. Up to 1,557L of cargo space is available with the rear seats folded down, dropping to a still-useful 708L when all five passengers are seated.

Cherokee Safety Features

As standard, the 2020 Jeep Cherokee comes with the safety features below:

  • Backup camera.

  • Parking aid system.

  • Individual tire pressure monitors.

However, higher trims bring more options to the table, including:

  • Blind-spot monitoring.

  • Rear cross-traffic alerts.

  • Lane departure warning system.

  • Forward-collision warnings with emergency braking mitigation.
